I work as a Full Professor (Emeritus) of English Language and Linguistics at the University of Santiago de Compostela. I studied Germanic Philology in Santiago de Compostela and specialized (1975/1976) in English Linguistics at University College London, on a British Council scholarship. After completing my doctorate (Extraordinary PhD Award, Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, 1980), I was appointed (1984) Associate Professor of English at Santiago de Compostela and since May 1990 I hold the chair in English Language and Linguistics.
Since 1991 I have been the director of the research unit for Variation, Linguistic Change and Grammaticalization (VLCG). The unit carries out internationally recognised corpus-based research on grammatical change in the history of English and on changes going on in Present-day English; on a broader level, we are also interested in typological issues, with a focus on cognitive-functional linguistics, grammaticalization and (Diachronic) Construction Grammar.
